OK ,problem solved.  The door and lock function properly (or seemingly so).  Here is what we found out.  If the door was first locked with the key before closing the door, it would not then unlock with the key once closed.  However, if the door was first shut, then locked with the key it would operate correctly.  Lesson learned!!

No problem Tod, I wouldnt expect you to do that.  Thx for the info. We got in through the drivers side and the door opened.  Now we will see if the problem persists.  Bob.

Does it unlatch properly if you use the inside handle?

If I recall correctly, there is simply a square hole in the latch mechanism for the shank on the outside handle to go into. I think there is a fixed square hole in the outside of the latch mechanism so a straight square shank will not turn. But a shank that has a round area turned in on it where it goes thought the fixed square hole will turn.

Sorry if this sounds confusing. . . But I gave away my spare door hardware and don't really want to remove the inside door card/panel and remove the whole latch mechanism to take photos or refresh my memory.

Hello Gang,
The passenger door has locked/unlocked and opened well for years, until now.  The key/tumbler operates correctly and the handle spins freely in the locked mode.  The handle and lock can be removed with the lock in place by removing the 2 attachment screws and pulling the unit out.  BUT, the mechanism will not operate to unlatch the door.  I'm looking for a detailed schematic of the internal workings of the door opening mechanism before I tear into the door.  Is there such a thing available.  Thanks to all in advance.  Bob Rogers
