16" wheel- What do I have here?

I just learned something.  "Safety rim" wheels first appeared in the 1941chrysler lineup.  Which also means that the safety rim 600x16 wheels I finally found for my 1940 Ply pickup are incorrect.  However-- they will stay . ;D

I can't tell from the photos--does the wheel have a "safety rim"?  If it doesn't then it is not a Chrysler model.

There is a difference between the 1939 and 1941 Plymouth 16" wheels. Although they look similar there are some "slots" cut out where the "hub" hits the "rim" and if I remember correctly the slots are longer on the 1939 and shorter on the 1941 Plymouth 16" wheels. Thanks.

thanks for posting the photos- your '41 wheel looks almost exactly like our '37 wheels.
the open area you photographed with the tape measure is 5.5" on the "mystery wheel" rather than just 2", + it has little humps rather than clips to hold the hub cap.? I understand the P15s have 15" wheels- could this be for a Dodge D24?

Actually the Ford lug bolt pattern is the same from 1928/35 then from 1940/48 on the cars and up through the late 70's on the 1/2 pickups and utilitires.  The Mopar bolt pattern is the same as Ford on all cars built from 1949 on, except for the 49/50 Merc's which used the earlier bolt pattern....Bill

I have a Model A and the bolt pattern is different. I know the Model A bolt pattern lasted until 1935.? Will check with the early V8 web guys to find out how late the 16" wheels lasted. Considering the source, Ford & MoPar are equaly unlikely. I want to sell it but need to identify first....

Chris,

Since the wheel has the same 5 hole pattern as your '37, do you think it might be
a Ford?  I think that Ford and Mopar rear wheel drive wheels have interchanged
since the '50's, but I do not know how far back this interchange goes.

welcome back!? now I will re-post the question I posted about 2 hours before the old board went south- I have a NOS mystery wheel which I acquired when we cleaned out my late grandfather's barns in 1985. Thought it was a Chebby wheel because that's what he drove. The Chevrolet web site guys say it's not.? It is a 16" wheel with the same 5 hole pattern as our '37 but a different inner disc profile & lacking the hubcap clips. Is this a 40's Plymouth or Dodge wheel ? I can email photos if that helps.
