electronic Voltage Regulator 6 V ??

"6Volt, Negative Ground, 50Amp Solid state VOLTAGE
REGULATOR --special order vr25"

This is, what Vintage Power Wagons hoped to have made for me.
But they weren´t successful.
They even were so kind to call around in their scene, but all
they could trace was low amperage varieties.
I found a Lucas Electrics substitution solid state, but max. output was 25 A,
if I remenber well.
So, I will take the alternator 1- wire way with an oldfashioned housing and
regulator included.
Now, here it is rainy and my Plymouth sleeps in its garage.
(I even can open the roof there, luckil  y having a very high ceiling on my place!)

This is a very interesting information!
As the generator never made any big, problems I will check this
possibility too! Until now, I didn´t order anything.

As for travelling:
This year we did use the Ply twice for marriages:
my younger daughter in Düsseldorf (August),
one nephew in Aachen GE/ Vaals NL (September).,
plus acouple of weekend trips.
Than, my wife´s dog Cooper (as Bob Drown´s) needs his
compartment in Claudia´s station car for Trips over 1 hour.
We are planning for Ply- hollydays in Piemonte / Italy next year, less dog.

I know you have already made the decision to go to a one wire alternator in a generator case.
I think you made a good choice because of the trips you take in your Plymouth.  But, for your
information only, I emailed Vintage Power Wagons to inquire about an electronic voltage
regulator that will fit in the late '40's/early '50's Mopar voltage regulator case (according to
their email).  The cost is $119.00 + shipping.  I'm thinking about this, although my car is working
fine now.  But, I do not put as many miles per year on my car as you do and I do not travel very
far from my home.

The solution 1 wire Alternator in an old fashioned Generator´s housing will be my choice.

Sorry for the delayed response. I've been away from the board for a while but I too am all about reliability. I now have a Pertronics electronic distributor con version and all seems fine so far.   Years ago I had a 50 chevy and installed a one wire alternator to replace the generator.  No more voltage regulator. It worked fine,
I have made quite a few upgrades to the car: radiator, air filter, optima battery, radials, seat belts and LED turn signals but kept all the original parts. It could be brought back to original in a weekend.
Still, they're old cars and you never really know when somethings going to pop up. On the way back from dinner last week the fuel pump gave out on our 51. My wife was a good sport about it.  It's all part of being a car nut I guess.  You've just got to roll with it.

I looked around the internet a bit.  Todd Fitch has a good discussion of doing an electronic conversion on his webpage,
but it mainly concerns converting a third brush generator as used on his '33 Plymouth to an electronic regulator.

There is a place in (it seems like) the U.K. called Dallas Auto Parts that sells an electronic conversion for 6 volt charging
systems.  It seems that you can hook it up and attach your old voltage regulator cover to it so it appears stock.

Check out these two and see what you find out about them.  I was sure I would find a conversion unit at the Vintage Power Wagon
website, but I did not see one listed.  This does not mean that they do not have one or know of the availability of a unit.

Is such device available?

I would like to test one. Here is the reason:

After all these years of improving funktion with (more or less) hidden, more reliable devices,
the old electro- mechanical voltage regulator is the only major part beeing able to
stop my Plymouth en route.
Yes, a spare one is always on board, but I hate these inaccurate devices, lesser quality now than 60 years ago!.
I usually go to a lonely spot and try to adjust some regulators at once.
This speeds up a lot, as I have not to learn the procedure for a single one only.
As temperature of the devices is crucial to their performance, I find this even more annoying.

Well, this forum trys to keep the cars original, but my wife refuses to undergo loosing 3 days in Cote d´Azur
again just because of a failing (new! chinese??) distriburtor contact set, as we had in 2007.
