yes..you have to pick the lock and turn the tumbler just a tad to depress the brass pin that retains the tumbler assy into the cylinder bore...then it is just a matter of keying the lock to a key you have or have a key cut based on the individual tumbler length along the five position..

I think you can buy a tumbler with Pentastar style key from O'Reilly Auto Supply for maybe 8 or 10 dollars.

Key would not be original hex style, but should work.
The problem would more likely be getting the old tumbler out of the housing.....can't recall if the key
needs to be turned for the pin to be pushed down.

So sorry to hear about your loss.

Around here, there is at least one "mom & pop" locksmith shop that will take some
sort of bent wire tool and "pick" the lock.  Then, look at the keyway, select a blank and
make a key for you on the spot.  Of course, there is a bit of a charge for this service.
It is better if you can bring the lock to them, rather than them coming to you.

key in the old days wee made from a tag number that came with the lock set when your car was new..it is not part of the registry like modern cars...locksmith time or do the job yourself..it is not that difficult..

My condolences on the loss of your daughter.  I'm sure it was an incredibly difficult time.

For your key, how hard is it to remove the lock?  An old locksmith here in St Paul MN was able to find a blank that fit an extra 29 Ply ignition lock.  From there he said he could make a key.  I did not have him make one, however.  If you explored this avenue with your locksmiths, I'm sorry I don't have any other ideas or info.  Good luck.  frank

I posted recently about the need to sell my '50 Special Deluxe convertible.  The reason was that I need to round up any money I can to help pay down my daughter's medical bills from fighting liver cancer. A fight she unfortunately lost. I have the car sold to a very nice fellow from Waco, Texas which is only about 100 miles South of where I live near Ft. Worth.  He's coming this Friday, 4-19, to trailer it home to Waco. Here's my problem:  The keys were taken by a couple of kids who broke into my garage and stole tools. They took the keys and planned to come back later and get the car. They were caught but don't know where the keys are. My buyer is coming this Friday to get the car and we need keys.  I'm hoping maybe a club member can make the keys by knowing the vehicle number. The number is 1 12402214.  Can anyone help me here? Local locksmiths say they don't have books that old to get key codes.
Thanks in advance for any advice.  And also thanks to those who replied to my original post regarding the loss of my daughter.. Your kind words were a comfort.
