Cylinder head bolts ??

Just as an added point of confusion, I used the grade 8 bolt show in my other engine for about 3 years, before I did my engine swap. If you look closley at the middle stock bolt, you can see that the upper threads are rusty, and only the bottom 6 or 7 threads were into the block, the rest on that bolt was exposed in the water jacket. Lots of poeple insist you need to put thread sealer on bolts that go ito the water jacket, but I do not see any benefit to that, as the bolt passes through the water jacket and then fastens into the hole in the casting below the water passage.

The thought is that coolant may leak past the treads, but the coolant is actually above the threaded holes and there is no flow of coolant through the threaded area of the block. The compound on the threads of the Pioneer bolt is an anti seize compound not a water sealent.

The pioneer bolts cost me about 90 cents each so I got the 21 pieces for less that $20 USD.

those look verry similar to the ones in my engine for the past 10 years and 20 k + miles. No issue withthe slightly shorter threads.

Depends on how far back you go. Studs and nuts were used on the Plymouth 6 engine head until about '38 or '39 when they switched to bolts.

I've bought several old, used, original items from Jean Chopp of "Chopp's Shop" on ebay. Jean and her husband/son have a lot of original parts, and are very easy to talk to and buy from. Look her up on eBay, and send her a message about what you need. At worst you'll waste your time, at best you'll find what you need.
PS: She lives in Canada.

I replaced all the head bolts with the exception of the two that are threaded on the head, in my 52 car, with grade 8 bolts and grade 8 flat washers. These bolts do not have the same marks as original, but with the washer installed, at a quick grance they look original. I have no idea where you can get a new bolt used for battery ground cable unless you machine one of the grade 8 bolts or get one from another engine.

Dear all,

I had gotten new bolts, but I prefered to stay with the old ones.
For me, as the new bolt have 6 windings less than the old, the new don?t dont seem as reliable as the old,
given the required torque! Also the hex head is too small for my opinion.

You see the more filigrane new bolts on the pic.

Any hint as where I can get (and how to describe in english) the old and stronger set of 20 bolts plus one with the additional hole for the batt. ground?
do they have a specification?
