Get some electronic parts cleaner at NAPA. Usually in a spray can.  Read the label and make sure it is safe for plastics. Access the switches and bulb sockets and spray and work the switches.  there may be some black crud that washes out.  I retrieved an ignition switch that I thought was bad with a thorough washout.

If you can get at them easily, you might try using some steel wool to swab out the bulb sockets.  You can do the same to your old bulbs and help the contact path.  Years of usage can lessen the voltage going to your dash lights.  And with 12 volts, you definitely have choices. Search the internet, or you local auto parts store for exact size swaps.  :D

'56 Plymouth Belvedere V-8, 12-volt. The level of illumination of the instrument panel lights (push-button panel, speedo, gas and temp gauges) is not very bright even at the highest setting of the intensity control . Q - Are there bulbs that work on 12-volt and will fit into the sockets, yet emit a higher level of illumination -- are brighter? if so, please provide bulb type(s). Same question for headlight lamps.
