Thanks for the answer.  The real voltmeter reads 13.7-14.2 usually when I check it(I should have mentioned that).  The voltage regulator seems to work ok, and I too thought of heat buildup but from where I don't know.  Some one who answered on Automotive forums suggested the cheaply made parts syndrome and I guess that that could be it as well. I just carry the original one with me and it takes only about 5 minutes to change , so...  We'll see.

Seem no one has an answer for you on this problem at this time.  In my years as a mechanic I did see this problem a few times but never on the same car (repeated) At that time I concluded it was the heat being built up in the engine compartment. Then I came to the conclusion it was an over charging system building up the heat (by putting a voltmeter on the vehicle to check the voltage) that vehicle I repaired the ground connections to cure the problem. I still don't know what does the damage you are asking about. lol Just an Idea. Try an auxilary voltmeter to see if it really does drop off on the charging when your gage does. Here I would shrug my shoulders. lol

Although this is not a usual area of discussion here I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it.  I have a 1980 Volare with 16,000 miles on it.  Twice I have noticed a problem with the epoxy(?) filler on electrical items under the hood. The first was the voltage regulator which began to have this material leak out from behind it about a month after I got the car with 8500 miles on it in 2007. I replaced it and no more problem.  Then the Ignition modual on the fender began to do the same thing at about 14,000 miles.  Replace it and no more problem.  However this year I have noticed the voltage regulator that I installed (NAPA) is leaking again.  Does anyone have any idea why this is happening agin.  Battery seems to charge properly.  Guage is about half way over on charge side at start and then shortly goes to small rate of charge.  Battery is a little weak(shoes low good on load tester).  Any help greatefull appreciated.  Thanks
