It's May 16th and we are hovering around $3.80 per gallon at the moment in Colorado for regular unleaded with premium at or over $4.00 and diesel at about $4.09 to 4.19.

Paper says $4 is not too far off.   :o

When I bought my current new car back in 2003 my view was that gas would be over $5/gal by 2010. Its 2011 now and I am a bit surprised that it has not happened. Yet.

It will happen as the world wide stock of "conventional" crude are in decline and the world wide demand is going up. At present things are barely balanced so any disruption (change in demand due to economy/weather or change in supply due to weather/war/accident) causes huge price swings.

In the meantime, that 2004 model car purchased in 2003 has averaged 45 MPG which means I don't worry about the cost of gas for everyday driving. For the old car, I only drive it about 3000 miles/year so the cost of gas is not an issue on it either.

My mind is boggled by the number of people who buy fuel inefficient vehicles for their primary transportation. I can understand it for a farmer, rancher or contractor: They need a truck to haul the tools and supplies of their trade. But that seems to be a minority of the sales of that type of vehicle.

Cooper and I gassed up the "Wayback Machine" this morning, with everything going on in the Middle East, don't look good for the summer months. Gas has gone up six cents this past week here in our lilttle hamlet. Granted a good share of that price is NYS tax, but...............
