Hey, thanks for the tip on removing the handle.  I was able to get a small set of vise grip pliers onto the brass collar and work the handle back and forth until it worked out of the crimp area of the collar.  Then the handle just slid out.  It will be no problem putting it back together with the original collar

Thanks again.

thanks - I"ll give that a try -

If I end up needing to cut them, I was only going to cut down to the creases, then turn it 90degrees and recrimp when I reinstalled.

I would not cut them off..it was so long ago I did mine tbut I definitely removed them intact..and was able to reuse them..remember these can be put back at 180 degress if you dink them a bit..I somewhat remember using a strap wrench, doubled over sand paper for both surfaces to grip well and used the assembly itself to un-crease the dinks as you rock it back and forth..

once I cut the cone off - is there a way to re-use it?  (turn it 90 degrees and re-crimp - will it hold?)  Can I use a piece of copper tubing as a replacement - and crimp it into place?

Right on the crimp..this cone must be removed in order to disassemble the handle assembly..

Bob,
Thanks, but the '46 is different.  The housing is off the car and the handle is held in the housing with a bushing (brass/bronze ?) that appears to be crimped onto the shaft of the handle.

On my 41...there's a cotter pin on the backside of the handle. By removing that I can pull the handle right out the front side...then the housing is secured from the backside with two screws (up high) and from the frontside with one screw (down low). At that point except for the bulbs, which pop right out, the handle and the housing are off the decklid in my hands. Not sure if your 46 is the same or not...Hope this helps you

Bob.

On my 1946 Spc Dlx Cpe, I want to disassemble the trunk handle/housing assembly so I can have the pieces plated.  Any suggestions for removal and reinstallation of the handle from the housing
