It's clean. Now what?

If the firewall is shiny, done in same paint as the body......you can even wax it.   
If the inner fenders are not shiny stuff, then some gentle dish soap and water
or some other mild cleaner as stated should work.   Sometimes only a good
dusting wth a cloth is needed.   Just depends.................
I even wax the undersde of my hood..........it gets bugs on it which come thru
the grille and radiator area.

If you are gonna keep up with it pretty regular, I would think that a rag soaked in winter formula windshield washer fluid (very important to have the methanol) would do a good job keeping the engine bay shining.

I think I'll start another thread with your question, as I suspect there will be several people who will want to share their painting experience!  I'll put "engine paints" in the subject line.

Now that I have the engine compartment clean and painted, how can I keep it looking good without damaging the paint?  I don't dare use any of the solvents I used when I wanted to remove decades of oil and grease.  There's no need to clobber the engine with a foam cleaner.  I basically want to wipe some areas clean, but I don't think a plain rag will be enough.
