Hello All,  I tried to send an email to Bob Manke but it came back as a mailer damon,  I checked the email address and it was correct as given to me .  Anyone know how I can get in touch with him.  I am wanting to find out if the serial number is stamped anywhere on the frame for the 1937 Plymouth PT50 truck.  I checked the right front frame rail area but did not find anything there.  thanks Dan

Hi Bob,  thanks for your reply.  I will check with Bob Manke to see what he can advise.  I will have to check the left frame which I assume is the front frame rail area.  I will see about posting some photos.  Right now I am not sure who to post any photos but do not have any taken yet.  Right now one truck is buried under a lot of snow and the other one is stuffed into an unlighted garage.  Both trucks are rough.  Not engine or trans in either one.  Various parts missing.  They came out of Arkansas some where and do have rust although not like the rust we get here in Indiana.  thanks Dan

I am not sure, but seems to me I have been told the number is on the passenger side of the frame in the wheel well area.

Check with Bob Manke, he is the tech visor for the Plymouth commercial vehicles.  I have spoken to him, he is a great man to talk with.  His email address is:

How about posting some photos when you get a chance

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hi Jim,   thanks for your info.  Once the weather is a little decent I will have to check out the left frame rail area to see if the engine number might be stamped there.  thanks Dan

The term "VIN (vehicle identification number)" is of fairly recent origin.  Cars and trucks of earlier era had "serial numbers".  VIN and serial number are one and the same thing.  If you found the tags with the serial number, that is the VIN of the vehicle.  As for the serial/VIN number being stamped into the frame - only the engine number was stamped into the frame.  Without doing a lot of digging, I believe the TRUCK engine number was stamped into the left front frame rail.  Passenger cars had the engine number stamped into the left rear frame rail from at least 1934 through 1949 and probably later....

Throughout the early years the serial number was simply a series of numerals, with certain blocks of numbers assigned to various assembly plants.  In later years, certain letters and characters were added to denote special models.  In the late 60's all serial numbers had 13 characters and in 1981 this was changed to 17 characters (and there is talk of adding even more characters as the worldwide assembly rate is eating up the available number combinations!).  It was with the 13 and 17 character serial numbers that a lot more information was available indicating model, body style, engine size, etc.  The 17 character numbers include info on emissions and safety restraints.

Hi Bill,   thanks for your reply.  I did not even think of the door jambs and have not yet looked there.  I will check them out.  Dan

According to the info I have, ChyCo did not stamp/indentify the chassis with a VIN, they relied on numbers stamped onto the engines and body tags which can be on the firewall and/or the door jamb....Bill

Hi,  I have a couple of 1937 Plymouth trucks and wanted to find out where the vin number or serial number(s) are located.   In particular is there a vin stamped anywhere on the frame?   One of the trucks has a serial number tag and data plate tag located on the firewall down below the steering column area.  The other truck has the serial number tag and data plate missing.   I had hoped there might be a serial number stamped somewhere on the frame.  thanks Dan
