Let us not Forget

Our hometown newspaper didn't have a single mention of Dec 7, 1941 in any prominent place that I could find.   A sad commentary on politics today.

I was just short of 10 months old on December 7th and my parents had just moved to Portland. My dad really never talked much about it. He had a broken knee cap and couldn't serve in active duty, but he worked for a floorcovering company that did a lot of bases around the northwest. I served in the Navy on a Destroyer in the late fifties and was stationed at Pearl. We should NEVER forget Pearl or any of the many attacks that have been made against this country and global freedom. Just my two cents worth.

For what it?s worth.? I think about it every day when my wife parks her Japanese built 99 Honda CRV in the driveway and every time I fill up my gas guzzling Chevy Suburban with Middle Eastern gas.? I guess the good news is that we still make our own lead but then again I work for a German Company based here in Virginia.

I was a twinkle in my Dad's eye in 1941.? ?But I won't forget this date.

It bothers me that the US is toning down the celebration of this date as to not irritate Japan.?

My parents were at home on that Sunday.  I would not be born for another 8 years.  My Father had served in the Army Air Corps and was stationed at Wheeler Field on Oahu, but was discharged before the war.  At 31 years of age, he was considered too old to re-enlist.

My Father told me this morning that he was sitting in the kitchen by the wood stove listening to the radio when he heard the news.
He was eleven days short of his 15th birthday

Where were you on Dec. 7, 1941?
I very clearly remember that Sunday in December.... My father, a couple of his fiends,? and I, were returning from a rabbit hunting trip up on the Mohave Desert of Southern California. We were riding in my fathers 1940 Chevrolet 2 dr sdn, I was sitting in the front seat between my father and his friend. The radio was playing music, then an announcer broke in with the announcement that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor.... Everyone in the car fell very quiet until the announcement was over.

As I recall, everyone in the car was not that surprised..... I remember one man saying... " We now know where all that scrap iron that was being loaded into ships and sent to Japan was used for, the Japs just returned a lot of it to us".....

Life very quickly changed in Southern California, as it did in many parts of the country... The common believe was that we would be invaded by the the Japanese within a few short days... Near panic was gripping many people. Since I was only seven at the time, my main thoughts were else where....Bill
