Cadmium Plating??

Sales literature from the early 1940's boasts that all harward on the Plymouth is cadmium plated. The pieces you described were usually plated. It would lead one to believe that you are correct in thinking they were cadmium plated.

In the process of cleaning up the underhood portion of my '50 and have been working on making the small steel bezels that surround the rubber firewall gaskets/grommets look better.  The undersides of these little bezels are fairly bright and reveal some sort of residue, evidently from a plating process...

I'm familiar with the silver (clear) zinc plating process, and these don't appear to be done in zinc...the coating is not nearly as bright as typical zinc plated hardware is...more of a 'mottled' or subdued silvery color with slight goldish tones, but not nearly as strong as the gold zinc phosphate either.  Could they be cadmium plated?
