yellow or black is just perference of color and nothing to do with application.  Most will use black, but yellow is "correct" in some apps.  The weatherstrip on my Vette was originally put on with yellow, so thats what I used.  Black will work just fine too.  Brush a coat on both surfaces and then press together... it won't come back off.  Good luck!

Thanks again for the information. One last question, 3M makes a black and a yellow gasket adhesive. The yellow is for rubber to metal and the black is specified on the label for cloth, vinyl, etc. The restoration shop in town said they use black for everything. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

The gasket is as a general rule glued to the body, not the vent. The 'lip" on the gasket? you are referring? to, a flat edge with a small lip around the edge, usually goes down into the recess of the body with the narrowest portion of the gasket up. The vent lid should just barely make contact with the gasket, to much gasket pressure will cause the vent lid to stick up above the cowl.
Please keep in mind that my experience with cowl gasket installation is limited to '39 Plm's, '36-'37 Fords, '40 Buicks and '56-57 Ford T-Birds...Bill

Please verify that the rubber cowl vent gasket gets glued to the body and not tot he cowl vent. Also, the lip on the gasket faces up and seals the edge of the vent?
