Dear Bill,

Tahnks again! Go

Go.... I called Pertronix tech line yesterday, I talked to a fellow named Marvin. I was told that the problem with the Chrysler/Plym ignitions is that there are three different distributer's that were used in 1951, each of these distributer's use a different 'IGNITER' module. 'Marvin' also told me that the original style Mopar points attach to a bracket on the plate which has to be removed in order to attach the 'IGNITER' module, thereby rendering the distributer useless if the need to install stock points arises.

If I have the number of the distributer you are going to use, Marvin will gives me the correct module number for that application. Pertronix does recommend that you use their Flame-thrower II coil with the Pertronix IGNITER.

From my point of view, the modification to the distributer is a mute subject since the electronic unit is so superior to the old point/condenser system, should a person have a concern about a failure, the simple solution would be to carry a spare module. A new module is a lot more simple to install because they just bolt in, no dwell/timing etc.,, to set because the module compensates for all that.....Bill

I didn't know Pertronix still made them for 6v pos. systems. Do you have a part number? I have a "48 that has stock ignition and I'd like to get one for mine. Thanks,   Wayne P.

Very nice, Steve! I have 6V negative grounded.

Came like this - from Donald Rehmke, Santa Barbara 93100, 125 St. Nicolas St., in 1994. World is small....

Thank You very much! Greetings! Go

GO,  I can phone Pertronix for you and get the correct info from their tech rep..... I would think that you have the stock 51 Plym 6v pos ground system, if not let me know.  Pertronix  is located just a few miles from me here in So. Cal....Bill

William, thanks ! My mechanic had been told from his Pertronix dealer, that a irreversible change has to be made on the P-23 distributor. That?s why I choose to modify my similar AL 12 ... Distributor.
I will search the Pertronix sites, seems to meet exactly Your diagnosis: seller has no know how, he is a bike guy...
Thanks! Greetings! Go

Go.... I guess I don't quite understand just what you are trying to do your ignition/distributer.  I have converted several ignitions, 6v & 12v to Pertronix, in all cases no modification to the distributer is required. The procedure simply requires the removal of the points/condenser and the placement of the Pertronix module in place of the points , following the Pertronix instructions. I KNOW THAT PERTRONIX RECOMMENDS A 12v COIL ON 6v SYSTEMS. If you are afraid that the Pertronix system will fail,  you can carry a set of points and a condenser. I have never had a failure with a Pertronix module in over 15 years of using them.

The biggest problem  I have had with the Pertronix system is the people that sell them, they are usually not very knowledgeable about the product and will not take the time to contact Pertronix. I have Pertronix modules in a '53 Pontiac 8, '56/57 Ford T-Birds , 59 Ford F100 V8 and my boat which has a Ford 460 V8. I had to contact Pertronix directly for the proper part numbers and installation requirements, that is how I found out about the 12v coils on 6v vehicles....Bill

I want to keep my P-23 distributor unchange, so I got that similar AL 12 distributor on a swap meet to modify it for a Pertronix ignition. I had a new mounting plate made to provide for the different locations of tresds and bolt holes. Now, the Pertronix my mechanic got, does not fit and the dealer says he can?t find another Unit.

So: anybody can help me with a ref. number of a matching Pertronix for my spare AL 12 distributor?

Thanks and greetings! Go
