When i had trouble starting my '41 and could only get the engine to "spit" back through the carb, I discovered that my distributor was 180 degrees off. Once I reinstalled it correctly the car started. However you said you had the engine running before. Did you remove and reinstall the distributor since then? It can go in two different ways, one correct and the other 180 degrees off.

ok first thanks for the replys had to leave the mill as after closer inspection found that some guy had put the floor together with road signs and beer cans and then a load of other problems came up so i've been busy!

I have a 1955 plaza suburban in the Netherlands.
Just for shure: For a V8: The #1 cilinder is on the driver side (left bank), at the front.  All odd numbers on the left bank. The firing order will be:
V8: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
If it is a 6 inline: 1-5-3-6-2-4
I do not know how mutch you know about this car but the most important thing to know is that it is originaly a 6V positive ground system.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Number one on the distributor, looking from the front of the car should be the first plug wire right down the center of the engine. Number 6 should be the back one. Number one on the engine is the first cylinder on the right side. 18436572 firing order, just in case. ;)

Original or Street Rod? That is the question. Is is right or wrong to do either? No, as long as an old car is preserved. What difference does it make. I have both.

Pull the spark plug on # 1 (front) cylinder (assuming its a six).  Insert a wire or whatever and roll the engine to top dead center and note the position of the rotor. That should be # 1 - then work around the distributor accordingly.

Hi to everyone from england! just bought a 55 plymouth savoy, it seems to be all there and quite solid. It's been in England for around ten years and has had a lot of people with limited skill bangin' about her with spanners etc,now I got her!! I've had her two days and i've got her fired up but the mill is lumpy as hell and only seems to fire on two/three pots. Now i think that the leads are wrong i've got the firing order but not sure of the starting point on the dizzy(ie of i can find out where lead one is on the cap i can check from there) as i have not managed to track down a manual yet any help would be great.thanks
