Steering wheel Removal on a 28-29 Plymouth

Be very carefull in trying to get that old steering wheel off. You might be asking for more than it is worth. You have to remember that in order to take the wheel off a 28 or 29 the 3 shafts which go down the housing have to be removed which consist of removing the light switch at the end of the steering column. Then the horn wire, then you have to pull all three shafts (1) the horn wire shaft (2) the throtle shaft and (3) the light switch shaft. This involves maybe unbolting the steering column from the frame so you can tilt the steering column down in the interior far enough for the shafts to be pulled and not hit the headliner causing damage. By the way there are two bolts which have to be undone under the dash holding the steering column up. Then there is the problem of getting the wheel off the shaft. You may mushroom it then it is shot. You will ruin the threads which the wheel and the black bakelite ring screws onto which holds your horn button and levers. If you are worried about judging they don't judge the wheel. You can have it wood colored and varnished or paint it black. I have gone thru all this on my coupe. I now own 3 steering colums for parts.

I don't know how a 28/29 wheel is attached, but if it's the same as a 31, with the hallow shaft, I can relate to you how I removed mine. The danger in removing a wheel with a hallow shaft is destroying the end of the shaft. contact me if you think it's similar. I made a tool that prevents mushrooming the end of the shaft which I would loan you.

The wooden steering wheel on my 29 needs some TLC restoration.? Does anyone have some advice on removing it?? I am not sure how this comes apart and I do not want to damage anything.?

Good indoor winter project for when the real cold sets in.
