Clutch Alignment Tool for 28-32 Plymouths

As I recall, the clutch spline is the same as a Chevrolet right up to the 60s . Should be easy to find a surplus shaft to use as an alignment tool. Incidentally,  the pilot bushing is the same as nearly all Chrysler's rear wheel drive cars and trucks. I used one from a 360 engine in my 28 Chrysler 4.

Our local best source for tools is going to have Hastings Universal clutch alignment tools on sale for $3.95 during its 3-day winter sale February 21 - 23. If anyone needs one I could buy it and ship by parcel post for cost of tool and post.

I just turned one out of a broom handel on my wood lath, worked great, it's marked "31 ply" and is somewhere in my tool box. My wife is still trying to figure out why the broom she keeps in the garage is a foot shorter than it used to be ;D Bill James

There are universal clutch alignment tools readily available. Any I have seen come as a multi-part kit with a shaft that accepts a series of bushings covering most of the pilot bushing/bearing id's. The shaft, fitted with the proper bushing, is pushed into the pilot bushing. Then the clutch disc is slid onto the shaft and then a tapered sleeve that fits over the shaft is pushed into the clutch disc until it is concentric with the shaft and the pilot bushing, at which point the pressure plate is tightened down. I have used on of these sets for years, and if the set does not have a bushing with an od that matches a particular pilot bushing id, it is about a five-minute job on a lathe to make one. Beats having a selection of transmission main shafts all to heck.

Thanks for the information.  I'm working my way towards the clutch from  the rear end and won't be suprised if I need one of those gadgets for my 30U.  Back in the day we just used a spare shaft from a transmission but those parts were easy to find.

I found a clutch alignment tool at a local Auto Zone that is a perfect fit for my 1929 Plymouth's clutch.? It should also work for 28-32 PLymouth's, since they all use the same clutch disk (according to my MAster Parts Manual).

The tool is made by Pioneer, Inc, and their part number for the tool is: TAT-5374.

Pioneer advertizes that they are the source for hard-to-find automotive parts.
