Guess I should have put this on my serial number plate posting -- I can identify these cars by the serial number if you want to send me that number.  I also have a complete listing of body number codes so can identify by the firewall body plate number as well.   Jim B.

Jim,  Thank you for the good description/clarification of VIN/Body numbers.  I resently purchased an old Plym , Bill of Sale only, that I was told was a 29, it has the VIN on the right door jamb and a body number on the fire wall therefore, it must be a 30 Plym. not a 29.....Bill

For the benefit of newer people to the board or to the hobby of old Plymouths.  Each car left the factory with three identification numbers -  serial number - body number - engine number.  On the 1928-29 cars, the serial number plate was a fancy looking "ornament" on the center of the dashboard that contained a code of three letters and three numbers.  This was part of the Fedco Numbering System used by Chrysler (and others).  The '28-29 cars also had a body number which was mounted on the seat riser if memory serves me correctly.

Beginning with the 1930 models, the serial number plate, using a straight 7 digits, was attached between the hinges of the right front (passenger) door post.  By the late 1937, the serial number plate contained 8 digits on Deluxe models and 7 on the less expensive models.  The location of the serial number plate was changed to the left door post beginning with the 1946 post war models.  Also in 1930 the body number was on a plate mounted to the engine side of the firewall, usually near the coil mounting.  The body number more or less disappeared by 1959.

All cars had the engine number stamped into the cylinder block at the left front corner, from 1928 thru the last of the flat head sixes in 1959.  Locations varied when they went to V8's and the Slant Six and I won't get into that here.

In addition to these numbers, the engine number was stamped into the frame -- early cars at the left front corner and from at least 1933 to the late 40's, at the left rear of the frame, on the frame rail facing you if you were changing the tire.

This is located on my drivers side door jam, I think it was put on the wrong side by a previous owner.  I have a 52, same body as a 51,,

I have a 1951 Plymouth 2 door wagon. I found the plate with the body number in a box of parts (I believe this one mounts on the firewall), but I cannot locate the VIN plate.  I understand that this was mounted on the driver door jamb (VIN plate).
Does someone have a photo of the 1951 VIN plate?  Are there dimensions for correctly mounting it assuming I can find it among the parts? ???
Thanks
Dan

I think a lot of people are confused about the differance between the body number on the firewall and the VIN number on the right door jamb. Most of the body numbers I have seen are four digit numbers wheras the VIN is usually a six or seven digit number.  The VIN number on my 39 Plym is plain except for the number, it is a California car, I parted out a 39 sedan last year that was an Eastern car,  the VIN plate said Chrysler Motors on it.

I just went through this whole mess with a car a friend of mine purchased in Alabama and had shipped to California. SEE 39 PLYM. CONV COUPE TOPIC....Bill

The number on your passenger door post it the serial number and is the correct number for referring to the car when you deal with the Chrysler Historical collection for getting a build card. For 1934 it should be a 7 digit number. You can look at

http://www.ply33.com/Models/PE/#production
http://www.ply33.com/Models/PF/#production
http://www.ply33.com/Models/PG/#production

Some states registered the car using the engine number. For 1934 the engine numbers should be prefixed with either a PE or PF. The digit string after the prefix will be between four and 6 digits long (PE1001 through PE230836 for the PE and PF1001 through PF7232 for the PF and PF7232 through PF41049 for the PG).

I believe that serial number plates were being reproduced by a club member at one time. Check the classified ads at the back of the Plymouth Bulletin, the Plymouth Owners Club's magazine.
