dvanzzini 1  there is a simple test to check if you generator is charging, run your engine at a fast idle ,disconnect one battery lead any one will do, if your engine carrys on running the generator is charging and you will probably need a new battery if it stops then i would go back to the other tests to see what is at fault

How about something as simple as a bad cell in the battery.  Check the specific gravity with your hydrometer.

Dear d.,
from the beginning of this hobby, I use a battery terminal clamp with a hand operated skrew for electrical disconnection. So I never had to bother charge losses on my old harness.
Anybody knows the name and a place to get it in US ?

I suggest You look for a Service manual. Very instructing and fun to read. I learned to do most things by myself  from it!
Good luck! Go

You might also check all your accessories that might draw power with the engine and ignition "off."? Things such as the brake lights, which can remain on if the brake light switch sticks.

A long time ago, I had a '46 Dodge pickup (used), and the battery would go dead every time I parked it. I finally started disconnecting the extra cab lights (on the roof of the cab), the add-on turn signals, etc., and the battery stopped discharging on me when the truck was not running.

The previous owner had wired some lights in such a manner that they had power even if the ignition key was off, and these lights had shorts in their wiring.

I don't know if this is your situation, or if you've already checked this; I thought I would throw it out there.

Presently, I have to rev up the engine on my '36 to get the ammeter to show charge; then it charges OK until the next time it is idling too low.

Regards, and good luck,

Hello all,
I just want to start by saying i'm new to this and as well as to classic cars. I just purchased a 1950 plymouth deluxe and i love it but it's not holding a charge. When i bought it the generator was rebuilt and i had purchased a new voltage regulator and it showed a c harge, and all was good. One night  i went to start it and the battery was dead. I jumped it thinking the generator was bad or something wrong with it, but the car never died and it runs good. So i messed with the regulator and i jumped the regulator ground and the regulator field and it showed a charge, the manuel said if this happened i needed a new regulator. Then i  jumped the regulator ground and the generator field and it showed a charge, manuel said to faulty wire. So i replaced that and nothing. i have yet to get new regulator, just cause it's brand new. Can give me some tips? or let me know what might be destroying my new regulators???? i really would apprieciate any help. Thanks
