There is a brass seat that you are missing. The seat has a pipe thread for the head, a seat, and straight threads for the gland nut. The bulb slides into the seat and the gland nut on the capillary holds it in place and clamps it in to create the seal so it doesn't leak.

The universal "mechanical" temperature gauges at your local auto supply usually have a few different seats in the package with different threads for various head setups. The only issue is if the threads on the universal gland nut of the included temperature gauge are the same as the nut on your unit.

There is a chance that an industrial supplier like McMaster-Carr has the seats though my quick search only turned up ones for running electrical cables into a weather tight box.

I am wanting to attach the water gauge sending unit directly into the head of my four cyl. Although the head and the sending unit are standard pipe threads, I am having trouble finding the proper fitting. Any  recommendations or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
