Title: 1949 radio antenna
Post by: 28 Ply.cpe on August 10, 2020, 07:27:15 PM
Which front fender was the radio antenna placed from the factory.  I see different front fenders being used. Were some just randomly picked when someone bought a radio afterwards and installed where they liked it best.

From what I have collected over the years, it seems that domestic models for the 40's production autos where on the left/drivers side. Export cars generally had them mounted on the right. (Canadian). Is this written somewhere? I do not know. Simply an observation.

i just purchased a 1949 Special Deluxe and the antenna is on the passenger side. Most pictures I have seen has it on the driver side. I will check the serial # and see which plant it was produced at. Thanks for the observation and reply.

I am thinking that since the radio was a accessory, maybe the dealer who installed it just picked the fender they wanted. It looks good on the passenger side. Not in the way of looking to the left at traffic while turning left.  Just joking.

Here is the 1949 I bought last week. From the second owner's widow who bought it in 1960 from the original owner.

The headlight bezels are not the original . But in the trunk are the new ones he took off the car in 1950.  I am going to put them on.

The car was rustproofed when new. There is no rust on this car and always garage kept. This is a time capsule. I don't know which hubcaps are correct. the full ones or the baby moons with trim ring. Also has newer tires but not the correct white wall. But it looks good

You might consider taking off those plastic, plaid seat covers.  There were some similar to these on my car when I got it.
I was surprised how nice the original upholstery was under those covers.  So, I removed the covers.  You might find a "surprise" too.

Yes , all my friends tell me to get rid of them. After 71 years I was afraid of finding out if the original material was still there after being covered up.  Haven't done it yet but maybe soon. I did get rid of the headlight trim also. Put on the originals which were in the trunk. Brand new. Car has 37,900 miles.

Hi.  On the seat covers if your original covers below the plastic is in good condition that would be great.   But if they are bad you cal log on to www.kanter.com as they sell replacements such as those plastic covers in colors of the period of your car.
My 50 Deluxe had been replaced in original cloth style before I purchased it year before last.
I have a question on radio antenna. when I purchased the car it had a bad antenna so I ordered one & it broke during installation due to the cheap plastic outside connector parts that you must tighten down.  So I need another antenna and need to find out who sells them that DOS NOT have those dang plastic parts.  They need to be metal.

I haven't replaced mine yet.  There is a vendor called Mopar Pro. They have one . Very expensive.  My radio doesn't work and the radio repair shop gave me an estimate of 700 to 800 dollars. Put it back in for the original look. I don't need a radio working.

If you like, drop me a P.M. with your email address. I have a few antennas that just may foot the bill for you. I will in turn send you photographs of what I have. Thanks.
