Title: Plymouth HP2 emblem
Post by: Cdclark on December 31, 2005, 08:09:54 AM
Does anyone know when the 1966 Satellite with the Hemi engine began displaying the HP2 emblem?  I just acquired one and am told the emblem appeared toward the end of the 1966 model year. There are two small holes in the left trunk lid which make me think this one had the emblem. I had a '66 Hemi Satellite when they came out new, but it did not have the emblem. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Cliff

I think that the holes on the left side of trunk were for a dealership emblem. i may be wrong, but most dealership logos/emblems were on that side.

1966 Satalites  with the 426 hemi and HP2 insignias, came out with the initial model introduction.? First models came out with the HP2 insignia, one on each fender and one on the? trunk lid.? After January of 1966, insignias changed hrom HP2 to 426 HEMI.? Here's a good question:? What does the HP2 stand for in regards to this model?

MOPAR DAN:  JUST A GUESS ON MY PART, BUT COULD THE HP2 STAND FOR HEMI POWER, 2 FOUR BARRELS?

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE ON THE EMBLEM. AFTER JANUARY, 1966, DID THE HP2 STILL APPEAR ON THE TRUNK LID AND, IF SO, WHERE?  MINE WAS BUILT IN MAY 1966, HAS THE TWO 426HEMI EMBLEMS ON EITHER SIDE FENDER, BUT HAS THESE LITTLE HOLES ON THE LEFT TRUNK LID. ONE PERSON SUGGESTED THAT MAY HAVE BEEN A DEALER EMBLEM SPOT---GOOD CHANCE HE IS RIGHT. DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE? THANKS---CLIFF

Cliff,
In regards to your question concerning the holes in left side of the trunk lid and what was placed there.? If there was a HP2 or 426 hemi emblem on the trunck lid, it would be on the right side.? HP2 emblems used two holes and 426 hemi emblems used three holes.? Please note that I am going from mostly memory and not hard research when we discuss these cars and my memory is based on the belvedere sedan.? ?Also, the HP2 designation meaning is vague in most peoples minds.? I asked the question before because I am somewhat confused about the meaning? myself.? Every time I have inquired about the meaning , I get a different answer.? I vaguely remember the term " HorsePower Squared ", hense HP2.? ? Let me know if you come up with an answer.?
Talk to you soon,
Dan

FOR CLOSURE ON THIS HP2 INSIGNIA QUESTION, I GOT THE DEFINITIVE ANSWER AND THERE WAS NO HP2 ON THE TRUNK LIDS FOR THE 1966 SATELLITE. HOLES PROBABLY WERE FOR DEALER INSIGNIA. STILL DO NOT KNOW WHAT HP2 STANDS FOR, THOUGH.

It is true no HP2 emblems were on the trunk lid but maybe this article can shed a little light on the HP2 itself.

http://moparmusclemagazine.com/featuredvehicles/45358/

"Moreover, except for its telltale lope, there were no billboard letters or plates denoting the 426 iron lung, only a set of badges lettered HP2, which stood for Hemi-Powered Plymouth (based on decals released during 1965). If your Hemi Plymouth was built before January 1, 1966, the HP2 emblems were on the front fenders; if your car was built after January 1, you got the new 426 Hemi badges that went on both Dodge and Plymouth machines."

There is a photo of one of the badges - they were on the front fenders.

Cliff,
After doing some research regarding the location of the HP2/426Hemi badges, production dates (Before & after January1,1966), I agree with the article Mark sent in.? I looked into some old books and magazines with articles and pictures of the 1966 Hemi cars and saw no badges on the trunk lids. ( Remember before I was going by memory ).
As far as what the HP2 insignia stands for I found out the following:
1.? Everytime I ask I as I get a different answer!
2.? Everytime I try to find written documentation I come up with nothing.? Every answer seems to be an opinion, not a definitive answer.
3.? The answers are as follows:
? ? ?a.? Hemi Power Plymouth? ( Most common answer )
? ? ?b.? Hemi Powered Satalite 2? ( From a current owner )
? ? ?c.? Hemi Powered 2 Four Barrels? ( New magazine article )
? ? ?d.? High Performance Squared? (? New article in Mopar Action Magazine )
? ? ?c.? From a friend who remembers ( me too ) a magazine article about the car and an interview with a retired Chrysler engineer ( who
worked on the program ) who stated that in preproduction the HP2 stood for Horse Power Squared ( a mathematical term ) and
followed through into production because of the lack of a proper name.  That the HP2 was put on temporaily until it was changed
         to 426 HEMI.

Hope this helps ?,
