hi guys. due to being stranded (twice) from dead batteries and the impossibility of jumping a 6v car, i've decided to convert to 12v. i thought i did everything right. apparently not.
when i turn the key to ign on, the main relay (horn relay) clicks and clicks, obviously it's a circuit breaker, i guess. and the coil resistor i installed smokes like a bitch.
what did i do?
new main wire (with fusible link) from new alternator to ammeter. (the original crumbled in my hands, and i switched sides so the ammeter would read correctly) original wire from ammeter to main relay. now from where the coil wire used to go, i spliced the resistor in. then from resistor to coil. i checked and double checked my wiring. i didnt change any of the original wiring, so where did i go wrong?
Dear Taylor Squirrel,
I try to attach wiring diagrams to this reply, if not I will try to e-mail them: Starter circuit, generating circuit and ignition circuit.
Maybe the resistor coil is hooked up wrong. Then, the Generator must go to the regulator first, not to the Ammeter.
Check following the diagrams. Remember, they are for positive ground, if You put neg ground, You have to re-polarise the Regulator.
Let us know the results!
Good luck! Go
thanks for the reply. i figured out and fixed the clicking, but now it cranks but wont start.
the coil is getting juice, but there's a little carbon buildup on the contacts in the distributor. maybe it's gas. . . .
i was looking forward to driving today, too. nice weather.
