Title: Question about cardboard heater box
Post by: samiam0821 on October 15, 2006, 05:09:03 PM
Hi, I am a new member and have a question. Do you have any advice on how to clean the cardboard heater box without ruining it? I would rather not have to take it off. Once it is cleaned I thought that I might try and spray it with some bed liner material. (other options are welcome). Thank you! Camille

If it was me, I would not do more then brush it to clean it. You have to remember that it is cardboard. As for putting something on it for a finish, I think the bed liner paint might be a good idea. Again you have to remember it's cardboard. I spray painted mine with a flat black paint. For what ever it's worth, that's how I did it.

One of the answers I got recently when I asked a question about finding a new or reproduced heater duct was to use POR 15 on it.   Sounds reasonable.

What I ended up doing was taking fine steel wool and gently cleaning it and then put a little lacquer thinner on a rag and give it a wipe. I used the spray on bed liner and topped it off with some black spray paint. It created a nice hard shell. See pics here.

Someone is now making a reproduction heater box.  I recently purchased one on ebay.  It is made from what appears to be a heavy cardboard.  It looks like an original and fits perfectly.

The repo heater boxes are being redone by club member Paul Taylor.  If anyone needs more info, contact me.
