The attached picture show the oil filter as it was removed from my '41.? I know there were several styles of filters and they sometimes were different colors.? This filter had a metal element with what appeared to be cardboard ends.? It was completely packed with sludge.? It appears the filter was painted silver.? Was that original?? The judging guide says the oil filter is black??? What part number is the filter shown in this picture?? What replacement element number does it use?? Are the elements available or do I need to buy NOS element to use this filter?? Finally, what decal was on this filter?? I have seen some with decals on the top, but it appears there was a round decal on the side of this filter?
Thanks for the primer on these old style oil filters.
Your filter can looks about right. If u get it cleaned up real good-as in like new-U can probably take it to your friendly NAPA store and they will look up in some old books they have -probably in the back- and let u know the numbers. Then trial fit a filter at the store. the rules say black paint(not on the inside) but I remember as a kid in the 40s and 50s at my dad's D/Ply dealership there were a lot of cars with Fram Orange filter cans.

Differnt manufacturers had different colors. I don't remember who made my NOS oil filter, but as you can see, it is tan and orange. Mine takes NAPA FIL3034 cartridge, which I believe is very common, though not universal.
