Title: 1948 Fuel Pump
Post by: tfirth6 on August 09, 2006, 08:56:13 PM
Hello,

I'm new too this list but not new to Plymouths.  I have a 1948 Plymouth Special Delux with has been in our family since new.  It has 48K miles and is totally original.

I just puled it out of storage and drove it home only to find the fuel pump leaking.  Now it is not leaking from the seals, but instead it is squirting out the front of the pump from a small hole in the casting body.  It looks like there may have been a small screw or something in this hole.  I can not see this hole in the service manual.

Is this hole suppose to be plugged with something, or do I have a bad pump which needs to be replaced?

Thanks,

Ted

Replace the fuel pump. The diaphragm is bad.

The leaking hole seems to be a spy hole to me . It is the proof for a leaking diaphragm.
It maybe prevents leaking gas to reach the engine spoiling its oil.

You can get repair kits too.

Fuel pumps for these are still being made and can be bought at NAPA or any of the big boys. Don't get an NOS part as the older diaphragms will not tolerate todays fuels.
