Title: 1929 Fargo Truck in South Africa
Post by: KeithW on June 23, 2006, 07:29:49 AM
Here's how she looks at the moment.  Still a few things to finish such as a roof for the back, and canvas side windows.

Need a speedometer - can anyone help?

Thanks for all the advice given!

Thanks!

The design was conceived as we went along, with inspiration from pictures of similar period trucks from the internet.  The original truck was supplied without a body and the customer simply built his own - flat bed, delivery truck, hearse, bus, whatever.  So I doubt that there would be any original plans around.  But if you want detailed pics of this I will send.  It is made of solid wood throughout - no framing - and shaped to the required curve.  It's all laminated from 50mm strips.  Russian Sylvestris pine from the Baltic.

Here is a picture of truck as found in Lesotho about 15 years ago.

I'm not sure but I think those very early Fargos have Plymouth roll-around speedometers. The one with the small window that just shows a spinning disk with the black numbers on a white background. Would you have a photo of the dash layout?

The Fargo QC and PT used the same speedometer as the early 1929 Chrysler series 65, model P (to DY-317-Y) , with Chrysler part numbers -
miles - 78906
metric - 78907

The KC and K1 models used -
miles - 300365
metric - 300366

These speedometers are marked as being AC units (United Motors Services, General Motors).

I have a copy of the "Plymouth Master Parts List" covering 1929-33 models, but no speedo assemblies are listed.? They say to contact United Motors.? None of the above units are listed in the "Dodge Brothers Master Parts List", same era.? And I do not have a DeSoto list in case they fit a DeSoto model.

Yes it does have a roll around speedo.  I have the pieces from the original but the casing has disintegrated and is unusable.  I may be able to make up a new casing but this will be many nights of work.  Hopefully someone hsas a spare.

Keith,
What you are looking for is just a shell of a 1930 Plymouth 30U Speedo. Not very hard to find, but you may need to have it rechromed or nickeled.
I am attaching a photo for you referance.

Bingo! Your Fargo dash is out of a 1930 Model 30U Plymouth. A speedo for a 30U Plymouth will be much easier to find than a Fargo. Good luck.? :D

Don't know if anybody noticed, but that picture I sent in of the truck "as found in Lesotho" is not in fact a Fargo!  It is a Chevrolet of the same vintage, and belongs to a friend of mine.  I got it mixed up with the original wreck of my Fargo.
