My crankshaft pulley (1939 P8) appears to be wobbling a bit. I've been told this can cause my engine vibration. The service manual I have doesn't show this as a "harmonic balancer" but just a pulley. What am I getting into? Just remove the radiator and pull it off? Then what?
On the 39, this is most often just a pulley. Unless it is badly bent or loose on its flange, it would be unlikely to cause vibration.
To remove it you need a "strongback" puller and two bolts 5/16 I think, or maybe 3/8, which thread into two holes 180 degrees apart. The rest of the extraction is pretty straightforward. Don't be tempted to push the pulley off by running the bolts up against the timing cover. The pulley will come off but the cover will bend and the seal will no longer fit.
Unless the pulley is loose or the wobble is affecting the fan belt, I would just leave it alone until such time as further service such as a seal or timing chain is needed.
Thanks for the reply. I just called the guy in Hemmings that rebuilds harmonic balancers and he quoted $150 to rebuild it. He said there's two types on the '39, a bolt-together and a riveted one. If this isn't the cause of the vibration, I'm at the end of my list! New clutch, motor-mounts and equal compression. I'm pushing 70 and I don't want to do something like this that's not needed.
