I'm kicking myself pretty hard right now. did I screw myself?
finally getting the 35 flathead back together after a year an a half of hold ups. everything has been smooth but slow going. until I go to mount the flywheel and realize that the bolts apparently have to go in from the engine side (head of bolt towards the block) but there is not enough space to put them in when the crank is in the block and the end cap and oil pan are on?
Sorry I can't help. . . It has been so long since I last had the flywheel off that I don't recall those details.
The '33 PD "Instruction Book" does show the bolt heads toward the block so I guess that is the same as for the '35. I know that I was able to replace the lower half of the rear main seal way back when. If I recall correctly, I removed the transmission, removed the flywheel, dropped the pan, then removed the rear main bearing cap. All this while on my back on the ground. Anyway, if you get the rear main bearing cap off then you should be able to get the flywheel mounting bolts into the crankshaft flange holes.
thanks.
my worry was not being able to save the gaskets. which took me a couple months to get last time. really dont want to lose the summer.
I chatted with a couple mechanic buddies and an engine builder. opted to tap the crank holes and install studs. then bolt the flywheel on.
should allow me to keep moving forward. waiting on an engine mount that should arrive this coming week and might actually get to drive the old girl again.
The pan gasket set should be available from your local better auto supply on a day or two notice: They used that same gasket for about 40 years if you include the industrial engines built into the early 1970s. Last time I needed one, I called my local store in the morning and they had in the store that afternoon. Granted that was about 10 years ago but I think that still hold true.
