can some one tell me the easy way to adjust valves on a 37 ply. i know it must be at oper. temp. but its very hard to do with engine running. i can remember a sequence of valves that would be open when the engine ( not running) turned to #1 cyl. at top dead center, but my manuel tells me nothing about this. any help would be appreciated thanks t-bag37
With the engine warm, remove both covers. Have someone turn the engine until #6 's valves are at the point where the exhaust valve has just closed and the intake is just beginning to open. At this point # 1 is in its firing position which is an ideal time to set both valves, then follow the same procedure for #5 and set #2, then #4 and set #3 and so on. If you would prefer to set the valves cold then add about .002 to the hot setting specs and everything should be just fine.
Some 37's had self locking tappets but most have a lock nut which must be tightened. It is not an easy job. If after careful adjustment the tappets are still noisy, there may be wear on the tappet surfaces which prevents accurate use of a feeler gauge. Usually this problem is addressed during a complete teardown by grinding the surfaces flat on a valve machine. dp
