Hi,, I am searching the links I have, and can make some calls tomorrow.? I am looking for a dual v groove crank pulley that will fit my 52 flathead?? I understand Desoto, Chrysler had power steering in 51-52 but used the same belt to do it?? I also understand they went to a dual belt system in 54??
Any help would be appreciated, I am putting? AC in my Crankbrook, I have the mock up for the compressor location, but would like it to have its own belt.
Thanks in advance for any info.
John
John,
I checked several of my parts books (thru 1956) and didn't find a listing for a dual-groove crank pulley on a flathead six.? A dual groove pulley may have been used later in the fifties, but I don't have any parts books from those years.? The early power steering cars had the pump mounted behind the generator so they didn't need the second belt.? You might try Vintage Power Wagons and see what they have to say.? Another thought might be to put a double groove pulley on the water pump and set it up so either the compressor or the generator is run by its own belt from there.? I've seen that configuration on newer cars.? ?Let us know what you discover in your search.
Harold
I found out what you already knew. The closest thing I could find was one for a early V8 and it does not match at all. Mitchell Motors spent a long time going through books and parts for me. I ended up purchasing another pulley of same size. I am going to drill out the holes for the the wheel pulley on the new, and bolt it directly on the existing and see how it fits. If OK, I will either drill two more mounting holes or have it spot welded together.
The mock up I have for the AC pump now is OK with one belt. But it only grabs a little less than 1/4 radius of the water pump pulley. I still think that would be enough cause there is not a lot of drag on pump. But my sidekick thinks at high rpm (out of a flathead??) the belt would float on me.
I may end up staying with the one belt but I would rather not. The other alternative is to put on a double groove pulley for the water pump and drive the AC that way. But I don't think the bearings on the water pump will handle it.
Here is the way it is now, without the correct belt yet, I just have it on to line the pulleys up.
Once the mock up is done I will take to my welder to fab a one piece unit.
From your photos, it looks like the lower radiator hose might have a hard time clearing the compressor or the belt.? Have you checked this out?? Mid-fifties flathead sixes had a vibration dampener bolted to the crankshaft then the grooved pulley bolted to that.? Might be possible to find a modern twin-groove pulley to attach to the dampener.? ?Another thing to watch out for is the clearance between the crankshaft pulley and the front gravel pan under the radiator.? The gas line crosses over on the front chassis crossmember at that location also.
Have you spoken to a street-rod air conditioning supplier like Vintage Air?? They may have a solution for you.? I remember that years ago the 'Mark IV' company made add-on AC units for cars.? Are they still around?? This will be a great addition to the car once you get it sorted out.
Harold,,
There is a good possibility the lower hose will have to pass within the belt itself.? I know, a unfortunate occurrence but don't think it can be helped right now.
I did purchase the AC unit from Vintage Air, a Gen 2 Super model.? After I took the old cardboard duck out from under the dash, plus the old heater parts there was good room for it to fit hidden away.? And, the defroster duck for the P23 at least is metal, and runs the length of the dash with its input on the right side, a perfect location for the new unit.?
But your right, they maybe able to help I will call them soon.
Keep in mind I am leaning very heavily to putting in a big block within two years, possibly one if I can plan it all out OK.? I am putting the battery in the trunk, the fuse block under the front seat, to make room for the radical changes needed when I try to fit the new engine.? ?So, this fix right now is not going to have a long life span, but I do want it to work, be in comfort while driving, and have all the new wire harness ready.
The front gravel pan looks OK for now, I don't think I will be coming that far forward.
And, it there is a dampener on the crank it has very little weight.? It looks in my book, and to me, the pulley and dampener, if any, comes off as one unit.? If I can separate the two, then that is my answer I think.
Thank you for all the food for thought, it helps me.
I bought a same size pulley for a newer model (I think), one that bolts onto a Dampener. Then put the original on a lathe to ream out the inside a bit so the new would snap onto it some. Then had it welded together. I get to keep the same timing marks, and still have the holes available to use a wheel puller if I have to remove it again. I just have to bring the AC compressor forward about 3/4 inch. Should work fine. 8) ;D
guess the pic size were to large
So,, now I will have the Ac compressor on it's own belt..... :P
Good Job! Should be a snap from here on out!
