Title: Coating on engine, frame, and other components in engine compartment
Post by: Pauls408 on October 07, 2021, 07:27:42 PM
I am detailing my engine comparment for painting the engine and other parts on my 1946 P15 Special Deluxe coupe.
I am finding a rubbery coating on everything including the engine, front suspension, steering column, and shift linkages.
I'm removing it and painting everything. Is this normal?

Sounds like aftermarket undercoating. Could your car be from an area that used salt on the roads in winter?

I live in western Massachusetts and the car came from Connecticut. What's bugging me is that the coating is so thorough. I was thinking since this is an early 46 that it could have been a completed chassis stored away in 44 when the automakers we're switching to defense manufacturing. The car does have the early 16 inch tires and rims too

In reading information on new P-15's I think I remember that one of the differences between the Deluxe and Special Deluxe was that the Special Deluxe came from factory with total car undercoated.  Might want to check me on that.  My 48 is also undercoated from stem to stern included under hood, firewall, trunk floor inside and total undercarriage.  My car is a low mileage original car.

My 48 Special Deluxe had under coating that was original. It only has 42k miles on it. The chassis, bottom of floor as well as the inside Floor and trunk is coated. Very tuff to get off. Hope this helps.

That is probably the answer. The Special Deluxe's were undercoated from the factory. Thank You All. :)
