Title: top folding motor needed
Post by: Go Fleiter on May 12, 2021, 06:10:25 AM
Looking for a good powerful electrical motor. Mine is a bit tired now.

My setup is not hydraulical and thus has no reservoir. It is purely mechanical with worm gear and spindle and flexible cable connecting it to the topfolding  motor.

Motor needs square receptor hole for square end of the flexible shaft´s braided wire core (identical to speedo cable connections)

Motor is oriented horizontally, see foto attached.

Foto shows diameter of approx. 3,2 Inch (~8,2 cm) and length of approx 4 1/3 Inch (~11 cm).

It has the 3 wire configuration as shown.

Bernbaum´s only stocks hydraulical setups and pump motors. At Kanter´s I couldn´t find any.

Any suggestion, where I could find?

Thanks!

Hi Go,
Sorry I did not respond sooner, had a health issue arise that kinda knocked me for a loop.
It would appear that the motor your top has is very similar to the top motor that was used on the '41 Ford/Merc open cars. They were 6v worm-drive screw jack type that ran both directions.
I would think that you could have the motor re-wound by an electric motor shop.
I have the name of a company in the Los Angeles CA area that converts hydraulic/vacuum tops to electric, have talked to them about converting my vacuum top to electric, i will have to look for their contact info. Bill

no reason for excuses, as You can see from my late reply...

I don´t know why this very aktive and useful forum had to suffer such technical problems,
sloooow..., and when having been repaired after years (!) all the friends were gone...
I used to open my Hobby Day with this, but 2 Years ago I discontinued.
Now, I´m back every couple of weeks only- usually no traffic.

first: every good wish for Your health!!

and thanks for the Ford- hint!
I will try it !

Hi Go,

I understand everything you said about the unfortunate near demise of the POC Bulletin, I find it to be very true what Henry Ford said " You build a business one customer at a time, and you loose a business one customer at a time" .

I am very proud of my contribution to the Bulletin Forum, my thread about the rebuilding of my '39 Plymouth has had over thirty-thousand (30,000) viewers since I started the project many, many years ago. I was quite up set when I found myself locked out of the POC Forum for over four months..

Ok... now back to the scheduled program:

I found the address info for the company in California that I have talked to about converting my vacuum operated top to an electric system.

thanks a lot for this hint!
I try to get a top motor there.
Online, they only show hydraulical equipment, no mechanical.

Go,
Are there no electric motor rebuilders in your area of the world ?

Well Bill, that would be the logical way!

But I have had very bad experiences with one recommended craftsman here.
He ruined my overdrive solenoid by not taking precise measurements before dismanteling.
Then, he was completely desinteressed in the matter and payed the amount back.
No problem- a new one was just 50 $ and here a week later.

BUT: I don´t want to be without a top motor, so I prefer to find an extra one before i give mine to rewind.
Mine still works, if slowly.

Go,  I might have found a NOS top motor for you.
I copied the pix you attached to your original tread and sent it to a man I know, he is going to check his stock this week end.
I would suggest that you check all of the 6v wiring system connections, especially the grounds throughout your car. The 6v systems are well known to have high resistance at their best, when you add poor connections to the system, it is sure to cause trouble. I have three cars that have 6v systems.
Just bought a 6v Petronix Ignitor ignition system for my '36 Ford.
I'm with you in being reluctant to take your top apart until you have a replacement motor on hand.  Wm.

I have done a lot of checking around with many of the old car parts dealers I have encountered through out the years. All of my searches have come up empty handed.. I am now trying to find a used '49-52 top motor that ca be rebuilt before Go takes his old motor out. Wm.

Hallo William,
that would be a good solution!
A rebuilt or rebuildable motor!

I love to have spare units of everything!

The contact to the firm "convertible parts" You recommended was very nice and friendly,
but they could only help with hydraulic replacement.

Thanks a lot!
