Depending on the state you live in it might be possible to get a title by discussing the situation with your local Motor Vehicle Department.? Many states have a procedure to follow if you don't have paperwork for a car. I did that a few times when I lived in New York and the DMV there was very easy to deal with.? Another possibility is going through a business like Broadway Title Company (they advertise in Hemmings along with several others) who will get a title in your name from one of the Southern states for a fee of a couple hundred dollars.? You might want to verify that your home state will accept one of these titles before going that route.

If you buy a title, the vehicle numbers on it won't match the car you have, which can create all sorts of difficulties later on.

Hope this helps.
