Title: 1928 Brake adjustments
Post by: DWhited on December 27, 2019, 12:36:39 PM
I have very little pedal. I believe the brakes are out of adjustment. I assume the correct adjustment would be to remove the wheels / drums and adjust the lower eccentrics to the point that the drums have slight resistance when reinstalling them. I thought about cutting slots in the threaded end of the eccentrics that would allow you to move the eccentrics from the area of the lock nut on the outside of the backing plate giving you more accurate adjustments on the front and rear shoe without removing the wheel. any thoughts or suggestions?  Does anyone have any information on replace shoes or wheel Cylinders in the event I need them?

I assume you've found at least one web page that goes through the adjustment procedure. If not, then mine is at https://www.ply33.com/Repair/brakes

With respect to shoes, I've always just found the local brake and friction company that the local repair shops use for rebuilding parts and had them reline my shoes.

With respect to wheel cylinders, some sizes are getting to be very hard to find. If your cores are okay then your local better auto supply should be able to source the cups. Last I checked I had to mail order the boots, I think I got mine from Roberts. If your cylinders are bad then I'd suggest getting them sleeved in brass or stainless.

You can find my list of vendors and some parts cross references on my website too, just look under parts.

You do not really have to pull the drums to adjust your brakes. The bottom two sort of rectangle shaped bolts are the accentrics to move the shoes in and out. You will have to jack up the car and spin the wheel till you get the tightness that you want. I would myself remove the drums and rebuild or replace the wheel cylinders and rebuild the master cylinder and check the old brake hose at the front wheels and the flexible line at the back pumkin . These hoses swell over time and the fluid will not pass through. You may just have to bleed your lines to get the pedal back up.  Good luck. Any problems you can email me at . I have a 28 cpe.
