Title: Help, Dad died and had a 1961 Valiant
Post by: Sue1961 on May 21, 2006, 10:14:22 AM
Dear Owners of Plymouths
My Dad was so proud to have his 1961 Valiant station wagon, four door.  He always laughed and said Jay Leno might buy it. He kept it till 2004 when he passed. Now it is in my garage to free my Mom from her worry. I have NO IDEA of how to get what it is worth. He always said it would bring $5,000 but my son doubts it from looking online since it is no muscle car? It is in Great shape I would say with only a little rust under the passenger doors, and just passed its yearly inspection. Seat covers and head liner are in great shape too.  New Tires and battery. So I ask YOU for help.

Where are the BEST places to spend a little money to advertise? I had a boy two years ago take it to the Carlisle Fairground show and there were one or two men interested and said it was worth 5 grand. But, my Mom decided then that it was too soon to part with it....ahhhh. So now what do I do? I have no one around to take it to Carlisle again. So I am beginning anew.  I thought ONLINE would be the way.....but there are SO MANY SITES. Which ones do I use???

I appeal to any and ALL of You for help.  My DAd was once a service manager of a garage, and always said car collectors were good guys to save the old cars......Can anyone help?  Thanks in advance, Sue

Where is the car located?   It would help if we could see some pictures.   You can go to your local book store & pick up a copy of Old Cars Price Guide. That should help you to establish a value of the car according to the guide. One big thing to remember is the car is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Hope this helps!

You can always advertise it in the Plymouth Bulletin which is published by the Plymouth Owners Club every two months.  A non-member ad, with photo, only costs $7.50 and the magazine goes out to 3,500 members.  If you're interested contact me at   Jim Benjaminson, Membership Secretary, Plymouth Owners Club, Inc.

Dear Bob Kinker

My email address is . I am new to your system here and lucky I found how to get your responses...so thanks so much. If you could write to the aol in the future it would be great...and I will send the pics from there too.

If you would send me your email address(sorry if I have it, not sure which it is) I would be glad to send you pictures...my son took many and I can send them online....or to anyone else who would read this.  I emailed Jim Benjaminson who was kind enough to tell me about running an ad in the POC....and I guess I can put one picture in with the sale ad.

The thing is.....it would help if I knew...my Dad always said 5000 and two guys offered near that at Carlisle car show two years ago...sadly my Mom wasnt ready to sell them, so now its in My garage.  AGain You are correct...its only worth but someone is willing to pay..I recall years ago my husband and I saw a red beer bottle that was selling for $50 and I thought if ONLY I could find one cheap and sell it for that....eventually found one..and almost gave it away. This is a little more than the bottle, and the money my Mom is going to give my son for college, so I want to try to get the most possible, a FAIR price without giving it away...if that is the case guess it will sit till I die...(Hmm I am 52 now, lol)

I want to ask a fair price...books I have checked and online say 2500-7500 depending on condition. I would say its in great shape except for the rust under passenger doors....passes inspection every year, headliner good , new tires and new battery....seat covers perfect.

Its in Chambersburg, Penna off the Scotland exit of 81, in my garage.

Sue,

I don't really want to discourage you but you have to be aware that you might have to sell it for a lot less than you want.

The biggest problem is the Valiants are not real "HOT" right now.  I saw a beautiful 62 on eBay that was not stock but a very nice sort-of-restoration - new paint - low miles and fresh - though not original interior - they could not get $2500 - the reserve for it.  Be prepared to take a long time to get anywhere near $4000.00 out of it - if it were a ultra-clean - no rust - no wear car - it would go fast but the problem is few collectors want to spend the money for a car that will not go up in value.  Demand is what raises the price of the car not that is is a very nice clean car.  I am looking at a California - one owner 1965 Valiant Convert - I bid top bid on it on eBay (below reserve) of $1890.00 and it did not sell - I am working with the seller - I might have bid more but I could not connect with the guy to see it.  He is probably going to have to sell it for less than he has into it.  He bought it to sell - shipped it to Minnesota and now can't get what he paid the original family of the original buyer of the car back out of it.

A guy here in Duluth where I live has a 1962 Aluminum block 2 door Valiant sedan from Montana - no rust - clean car - under 60,000.00 - oringinal paint - he has been trying to sell if for five years - he paid $5000.00 for it in 2001 and can't find a buyer - he will have to sell it for a lot less - but I guess he would rather keep it - bad thing is he is storing it outside - it is not going up in value - it is going down.
