My '51 Cambridge has an oil leak coming from underneath the oil filter canister.
I have the proper o-ring in my possession.
I'm sure it goes in the bottom of the canister but does it go on the inside or on the outside of the canister?
Thanks in advance.
Robert,
I assume your canister is similar to mine, but maybe not. Mine has a 1/8th inch copper tube coming in the bottom and
a 1/8th inch copper tube coming in the side. To change the cartridge, i unscrew the top, empty the old oil left in the
canister and change the cartridge. My cartridge just comes with a large disc shaped "washer" made of rubber and the
rubber "O" ring that replaces the old "O" ring in the top. I really have to tighten the top tightly to stop it from leaking.
Also, my canister has a pipe plug in it at the bottom for a drain plug. I can send a photo if you would like to see it.
Hi Bill.
A photo will be great, thanks.
I think what you said is on the money.
Let me explain what I discovered today.
First about a month ago, when I first got the car, i changed the oil and filter.
When I did that I removed the large rubber washer that kinda fits into the groove in the canister top. I replaced the filter and th at rubber washer and tightened everything down.
It leaked pretty bad from the bottom of the canister, ran down that copper tubing and dripped.
It ran along that tubing for quite a bit before hitting the ground.
Now that has only gone 12 miles since then as I was addressing other issues and getting the carb rebuilt.
Today, i removed the canister top and took that newish washer and placed it carefully aside.
I looked super close and thought I saw another washer smashed into that canister top, in the groove. It was very hard to tell at first. Looked like perhaps just gunk and oil crammed in there. But when I picked at it, sure enough it was an additional washer/gasket in there.
So that means at some point, a previous owner had double gasketed that canister top. Is it possible that with 2 of those washers in there....it prevented me from tightening that down sufficiently and that was the cause of the leak?
I have removed that old washer and threw it out and put just the newer one back in and tightened it down real good. I won't be starting the car tomorrow as it will rain here all day.
But the next time I start the car I will know if the leak is gone.
What do you think? Did I solve my problem by accident or not?
Thanks
Hi Robert,
if I remember well, the upper gasket prevents the used oil from shunting to the exit without passing the fiter elements.
You must have a gasket to seal the upper cover (I have mine and 2 different other styles in the part book) . Than, the lower and upper elbows/ nipples have to be oiltight. Before startung the engine, You should clean the oil canister well and put a paper- towel- braid around both pipe fittings to be able to find out, from where the oil dips really come out.
If it is not the cover, You will have to take the canister out to check the oiltightness of each of the possible leak places.
Greetings from Düsseldorf!
Go
Go....I'm a little confused.
Are you saying that the lid of the canister being double gasketed could not cause an oil leak from the bottom of the canister?
I was hoping that was the answer to my issue.
Thanks
well, there are several different canisters, MOPAR and other after market.
I don´t know, which one mine is.
Mine stants upright, cover on top, one fitting at the center of the bottom, another at the side, upper quarter.
I only have this foto on hand- not mine and no copyright, but the it´s link does no more work.

In this configuration, I think failing upper gaskets can only make leaks from the cover, not at the bottom.
I think, You should try to identify the point of oil loss and than see how to proceed.

Go
Go.....you were 100% correct.
My lid gasket was not on properly.
I was adjusting the carb while motor running and I saw from that angle the oil
being pumped out from the top of the canister where the gasket was not seated right.
I was surprised how much oil it could pump out!
Fixed the gasket and my problem is gone.
Thank you Go and Bill.
I´m happy that You solved the problem fast!
Nice driving!!

O.K., Robert,
I finally got these oil filter photos. I hope they are worth something to you.
Thank you Bill.
Your oil filter canister is different from mine.
Mine, the top is held on by a large wingnut type fastner. That wing nut stays on the canister top when removed.
Also I see your drain bolt on the bottom.....mine does not have one.
My problem turned out to be a poorly seated o-ring/gasket at the lid.
So the oil was being pumped out from the top. Properly reseated that gasket and all is well now.
Thanks again.
Robert,
I have seen the type of filter canister you describe. When removing the lid of my canister, the bolt stays with/is captured by
the lid. I know what you at talking about when you say that there was a leak around the seal between the lid and body.
After a filter change, I really have to "crank down" on that lid bolt to stop any oil from leaking out around that point.
I have, before, not tightened the lid down enough and have had an oil leak there. It makes a big mess.
