Title: Radio repair
Post by: Flathead on June 02, 2018, 08:03:37 PM
Hi everyone.
Can anyone out there recommend a good shop for radio repair work? I have a 51 cranbrook and just bought a radio on Ebay,  I want to send to a shop to have checked out and refurbished. Any good or bad experiences

My repairshop is on the wrong side of the Atlantic for You.
Anyhow let me give You my 2 Cents:
All the old condensators may not work anymore and seem to be a fire hazard.
With some luck, changing them could reinstall the function.
That is not difficult, and You may want to try by yourself.
My Unit is since working 22 years (less the power switch which I had to change later), but the last (dutch) radiostation
providing MW emissions, stopped doing so.
Do Your stations still transmit MW or SW?
Only FM is still available here, but my Philco can´t receive these.
If giving the Radio to a shop, consider to provide for a hidden connection for Your MP3 player,
if wanting the sound of a 1951 Radio and speaker.
When inserting the MP3 plug, the radio receiver is separated from the amplifier
and only the MP3 is connected to the amp.
Greetings from Düsseldorf!

Patrick Greer was recommended to ma although I have yet to do anything,  mailto:

There are some folks that will replace the old system with new electronics, keeping the functionality and AM. For these shops they also offer innards that produce AM, FM, bluetooth etc. Personally, I like the replace with AM. I searched for all tubes in my radio and found only three that were available, that is not to say an old radio repair shop would not have better knowledge of sources.
