Title: 1948 Plymouth
Post by: BobCook on February 08, 2017, 05:47:39 PM
This is my first time posting so please bear with me. I purchased my 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe 2 door coupe in early January 2017 (yes only about 4 weeks ago) and it had been sitting in a garage since 1979 (was used by previous owner and his family since 1966-1968 he told me. It has 37,460 miles and has radio, clock, heater, both sun visors and arm rest front and back, ash trays on both rear sides and he does not think it had gone around! The mice surely have gotten into the seats unfortunately but body and frame solid. I have pulled the plugs and put Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders, let it sit for a week and and then turned the engine over by hand at the fan and it turned easy. I cleaned the plugs and will disconnect the fuel line prior. Should I do anything else as I want to try and start car. I may try to trace the car history but in Mass I know that will be a real challenge! I will be looking for interior cloth as close to the original as possible any suggestions? I have already contacted LeBaron Bonney and they do not have and seem expensive. i am sure I will have many further questions. Thanks, Bob

Before starting it I would change the oil. Over the years plenty of condensation could have built up in the crankcase. Remember these cars did not have a closed ventalating system.

Both Chet and CHS are correct, change all the fluids, make sure the points are clean and gapped correctly, also as a precaution, I wouldn't add any gas to the gas tank, I would take and old plastic lawn mower gas tank, attach it to the opened hood so that you can get gas directly to carb and not get any dirt in it. Good luck and keep us posted, also need some photos.
If you do facebook the POC has a great page with many P15 owners and some are from Mass, one is from Bolton MA

I got the car started this past weekend and it sounds pretty good. Have replaced all the breaks, break lines and gas lines. Brought radiator for testing and has issues with tank and core, need replacement. Gas tank also out and being cleaned. Thanks for all the advice. Next question is does anyone know where to get a chart of the original interiors offered in the car. Mine is a light gray with a red & yellow stripe and door panels appear to be a blue/gray. Want to get something close. LaBaron Boney does not carry it any longer and they are too expensive for me anyway. Any info or suggestions on this? Will try to put a few pictures of the car on soon (need to figure it out)! Thanks, Bob

Hello, I have a 48 Plymouth special deluxe 2dr sedan. When I did the interior I used SMS auto interiors. They sent me samples, I then did a lot research to find factory photo, ads and actual photos of my parents New 48 Plymouth when they did a vacation trip from Iowa to California. I enlarged the interior photos to show the stitching detail. I made a little referance book for the shop to use when doing the interior work. Good Luck with your car! I have had mine for 32yrs.
