1956 Plymouth Belvedere. Both the steering wheel and the 2-prong turn-signal mechanism actuator at the bottom of the steering wheel hub are from another car, and were purchased separately. When I signal for a right turn, the mechanism re-positions the stalk to the "no turn" position after rotating the steering clockwise and then counter-clockwise. When I signal for a left turn, and rotate the steering counter clockwise, then clockwise, the stalk is NOT re-positioned; the stalk does not move. I have removed the steering wheel and inspected the turn-signal mechanism, but saw nothing damaged -- I have two other mechanisms from other cars, and the one in my car looks exactly like the two spares; the spring is intact; nothing appears to get stuck when I manually activate the mechanism. When I signal for a left turn and rotate the steering wheel I do Not hear any metal on metal contact, as if the actuator is not contacting any of the mechanism.  Q - What could be causing the mechanism to not cancel a left turn? I have a 52 car and your turn system sounds similar to mine.  Had a problem with the turn signal working good on one side but not on the other. For some reason the tab on the bottom of the steering wheel  was incorrectly positioned and this caused the problem.The two pronged part on the back side of the steering wheel has a indexing hump on it that has to mate up with a indexing thing on the steering wheel. The indexing or clocking things were about 180 degrees apart and that was the problem.
