I have a 39-P-8 and have noise coming from the diff- for those members that are out here- is there a place that anyone knows of that can work on this rear end-?Thanks,Dennis
look for a mechanic with grey hair. Seriously, there are no secrets to differential work but it is hard to quiet a gear noise if the gears have taken on an abnormal wear pattern. For a complete replacement gear set assembly, 1937 to 1952 will fit
David, do you know of anybody changing the differential gears in a 39 Model. In lieu of putting in an Over Drive unit. Thanks
SDGlenn
Desoto often used a 3.7 -1 ratio during the 46 to 48 years. This will bolt right into your 39's housing, but if the 39 is still running a stock 201 engine, you will be disappointed in the performance unless your driving is on mostly level ground.
There is an overdrive which was in use in Chrysler and in export Plymouths from 35 to 39 and it will accept the floor shift or the column shift as used in 39.
I have a 39 Chrysler unit which is considered to be the best year because it has an electric kick down. I was going to use it in my 35 but have decided to change the gear ratio to 3.7. However, my 35 has a later 218 engine. Just so you don't get your hopes up, shipping this unit would be prohibitive.
A 3.9 ratio as found in many Plymouths of the 49-52 years might be a good compromise. It worked well in a 37 that I had which had the 201. You may want more information and you are welcome to correspond with me directly. I can be found as the tech advisor for 1950 in the plymouth Bulletin.
I appreciate the info David. Maybe I don't even need to look for a higher speed Differential, I maybe better double check the gears I have in this one. I have been driving 60 MPH and it doesn't seem to be rev-ing to much. I will check this ones gear ratio. Where are you living David, I do travel around quiet often, like to go visiting old friends and relatives. lol
Thank you,
SDGlenn
sorry to have taken so long to reply, sdglenn. I live on Vancouver Island that is Canada's south west corner.
Being on an island makes shipping costly.
