I have a '39- P-8 and am changing the trans oil and the rear end oil- what can I use?90W Hypoid-?? what in the trans and what in the rear diff-?-..I also understand that they take approx a quart each-?- In draining the rear diff- just loosen a couple of the bottom screws on the rear differential plate-? as opposed to vacuuming it out-??
Thanks,
Dennis
Service manual suggests
Transmission: fluid gear lubricant FGL SAE 80
rear axle: Hypoid gear lubricant HGL SAE 90
As of the pics in my manual, You should find bolts plugging drain holes on both assemblies.
Trans: right side, near the cluch
Differential: right side, back in the axle housing (not in the Diff carrier)

modern hypoid oils are not white metal friendly, our synchros, balking gears and some other stuff are brass and bronze. So you need something rated GL 3 or lower for the trans. Diffy's aren't as fussy.

The container of Sta-Lube SAE 140 Multi-Purpose Hypoid Gear Oil in my garage says, among other things:
QuoteNot corrosive to copper, bronze, or other non-ferrous alloy bearings and bushings.
I think the canard that hypoid gear lube is not compatible with brass and bronze is from decades ago when different high pressure additives were in use.

regarding sulphur compounds, if the lube has no sulphur should be good to go.
