I have a 39-P-8..It runs fine in reverse but when I stop and put it into first-...it is like I have the front wheels chocked. I had the car up on jack stands- and actually have run it up on stands-I have had it in 1st gear and 2nd- when I did I can faintly hear a thumping sound (??)- No emergency brake on-But when I put it on the ground- no forward movement- it seems to go into the 3 speeds fine- but won't go forward in first- ??? I have had this car at least 13-14 years- this is a first..any ideas-? Thank you!! Dennis ???
Dennis, I had a similar incident w/ my '50 when I was in high school in 1960. The problem was several broken teeth busted off from I think the low gear and they would jam the works. Don't try to move forward or you could actullly crack the housing or break a shaft. Remove the tranny and disassemble carefully, after draining of course. Clean throughly and replace broken parts.
