Title: Correct hubcaps for a 1939 P8 Convertible
Post by: P8ConvOwner on April 26, 2006, 11:03:39 AM
My 1939 P-8 Convertible came with two different hubcaps.  One pair says "Plymouth" in thick italic letters, the other pair just has the round Plymouth ship logo.  First question: which one counts as the correct hubcap for 1939 and for my model?  Second question: where can I buy a complete set of good looking hubcaps?

Thanks,
Chip

The one with the end on view of the Mayflower is the correct one.  The various scripted ones are post WW II.  the auto used 9" diameter and the truck used 10"--or is it the other way around? At any rate the ones I have on my 40 Ply PU are the ones for the auto and I can't find the truck size.  Check one of the ads in Hemmings for hubcap dealers- I got the 5 I have from Hubcap City in Reno years ago and I think I paid $75 for 5, including one that was curbed pretty good.  Let me know if u need to take them apart as I have figured out a coup;e of tricks.

The '39 cars had a hup cap that had the ship on the cover. The ship is imbossed into a circle that is 3-3/16 wide, there is no Plym name on the cap. The '40's are different from the '39's. The original caps are chrome over brass, the brass "cap" is attached to a steel base cap that is 10" wide. If the assy is original it will have DPCD stamped into the base cap. Roberts list the cap covers in their catalog.  I picked my caps up on ebay, purchasing over twelve of them over time in order to get a good set of base's that were not rusted out and a decent set of covers to have rechromed.  From time to time I have seen cap covers on ebay, however their quality was very poor.

If you want pictures of the '39 caps/covers and a more detailed description of how I did mine you can email me....Bill

Please correct my mis-information.  I thought the 39 and 40 shared the same hub cap with an end view of the ship, and the 41 and later had the words Plymouth and a side view of the ship

I always thought the 9" caps were for the Road King and the 10" caps for the Deluxe.  Both had the end view of the ship on them.  Plymouth script came in '41.  Never could figure out why they would bother to tool two different hubcaps with just a 1" difference in them!
