Title: 1941 Running Board delete
Post by: rreid740 on November 29, 2011, 09:54:47 PM
My P12 4 door has no external running boards.  I recall "knowing" once upon a time about "running board delete" as an option in 1941.  Makes some sense too, if you look at the 40's versus the '42's.

Now I am doubting myself.  I have never, ever seen another without the running boards.   Still, I'd expect to see mounting holes if a previous owner simply removed them.

Has anyone seen another?

Roger - if your car is a running board delete - there should be rubber pads on the forward edge of the rear fenders....and I believe a short piece of chrome trim on the bottom of the front fenders...

Roger,

My 1940 Plymouth P-10 Business Coupe has no running boards, instead it has rocker panels and gravel guards that attach to the front of the rear fenders.  Along the rocker panels is a stainless steel moulding that is approx the same length as the rocker panels.

1940 was the first year of the running board delete option on our Plymouths.  I have tried to find out just how many used this option but to no avail.

I have attached a photo of my car, you can see that I used the pickup bed spray liner for the effect of the gravel guards.  The gravel guards are one of the few items that I have been unable to locate for my car, hence the sprayed on bed liner

I have only seen one 41 Plymouth that was runningboard delete. Kinda had to look twice when I first saw it too! There was "just something missing". After a moment, I figured that it was, in fact runningboard delete. Just like Bob's car, it had special rocker panels, but did not have any shields on the rear fenders.
There was a factory, runningboard delete molding there. I remember looking at the car now with even more interest. Secondly, I noticed that that same car did not have the door vent, or so called flipper windows either! How cool was this!
About 8 or so years ago, I was lucky enough to find a set of the runningboard delete moldings at Hershey. I remembered that they were not cheap, but I could not pass them by. Now I have to go look for what in the world I did with them!!!
I only wish that I had taken a photo of that car, or, at least taken the fellows name. Maybe, he is a member and will respond to this listing. ::)

Jim - that's correct, though the rear shields were one of the clearly unoriginal items (the car was pretty original mechanically, but upholstery, paint, etc wasn't).
I recovered them in a floor mat material some time ago; hasn't held up well but it's all there to be redone correctly at some point.

thanks for the info -

Just a thought..... 3 years ago I bought (from my local Auto Parts Store) 2 rubber pads with a sticky backing for my boat trailer fenders (top of the fender so I could step on the fender). They measured 4 inches by 12 inches, and were flexable enough to meet the curve both ways, side way and long way. Then can be cut to match the originals size on the 41. These have been in the water many times, and the hot sun. They have never come loose ... yet. Just a thought............
Never had gravel pounding on them though.
