Title: Help Connecting New Horn Relay
Post by: Gaby51 on August 16, 2011, 09:07:59 PM
Hi Guys,
I bought a new Horn Relay from Andy Bernbaum but it's a bit different from the original.  I've marked the pics with the Letters  that are on each relay, and I'd love to know how to hook up the new one.  I figure the "H" lug goes to the Horns, and the "Bat" lug goes to the power source.  But I don't  know what to do with the 2 lugs that are only labeled "S".

Not trying to be preachy here but, I think a bit of forum etiquette discussion might be in order.  You have posted questions on several different issues, you have been having with your project. You have recieved some very good answers from folks who have done some research on your behalf.  Many of those have been left hanging, as in no reply from you as to whether you got it figured out, used the information given to your benefit, or have just ignored stuff and moved on to another issue.  I am sure Todd, and Tim, and others are interested in whether your tank has been vented, your wheels properly torqued, your generator and regulator working, your kickdown connected, or your plugs installed correctly.

I know for a fact that there are myriad illustration of how to wire relays into circuits, and by the process of elimination you have basically answered your own question. Power to the light load side of the relay is pretty straight forward, and since switches don't care which way the juice flows, there is also a pretty good chance that you can figure out what the "S" may stand for.

Soap box back under the table, and I do hope you get it figured out.

I don?t know Your style of Relay layout.
I guess S stands for solenoid.

So try if between S and S You get the klick of the relay.

Than try if while klicking You get passage between Batt and H

If so (for Car plus grounded):
one S to minus of ign. switch (no funktion with ign off)
one S goes to Horn button (is grounded)
H to the horns
Batt to minus of Batt.
Horns must be grounded +

Sketch is a GUESS on the layout

Good Luck!
Greetings from D?sseldorf! Go

Please allow me to jump up on plym 46's soapbox. For starters, I don't know the answer to the relay question posed below. But plym 46 has mentioned what is my pet peeve about this  otherwise excellent forum. I've received excellent advice here, which helped me repair my '36 at various times.

I've also given advice (on those topics where I've done the repair and know it works). Some of the advice involved going out to the detached garage, and thumbing through a MOTOR'S repair manual, or a Plymouth parts manual or shop manual. And those few who don't acknowledge help received, or provide feedback (did the advice solve your problem?) really get my goat.

Stepping off soapbox,

Pat O'Connor

Hi Guys,
I'm sorry that I haven't given any feedback yet as to how things have worked out yet because I'm still working on them!  I have several issues to deal with, and each new problem and replacement part all have to be solved on "paper", as well as in my mind (what there is of it) before I hook everything back up.  As of now I'm still dealing with which wires go where.  The car's original wiring harness has been reworked/repaired and so it doesn't exactly match the Shop Manual's Wiring Diagram.  At this point, I'm still just tracing the wires so that I can understand what goes where.  The car ran nicely, but without the OverDrive working, when it arrived back in early July.  At this point it's not getting spark (my best  guess) so I'm trying to get that fixed so I can move it and at least get it ready to "put away" for the Winter.
Finally, although some of your answers are "clear" to you, they are not always to me, I'm new to old Plymouths and 6 volt electrics, so it may take me a while to sort this out.  I also have other chores to get done before going back to work on September 1st, so not all of my time is spent on the car or computer.
That said, I do appreciate your time, effort and help, and be assured, when I get these problems solved, you'll hear from me.   :)
Peace,
George
