As someone new to "old" Plymouths, I was wondering what I should use in the Radiator. I know today's cars use Year-Round Antifreeze/Coolant, but is that what I should put into my 1954 Belvedere? Should I just use Distilled Water? (Of course I realize that I'd have to drain the water in Winter and add antifreeze) The car will be used most of the year, with only occasional Winter use in order to protect it from the salt & sand used on the road.
Your input and experince will be most appreciated. :)
I use a mix of antifreeze and distilled water all year. I also flush the system everyother year. The fluid comes out clean but at least I don't have to worry about corrosion build up in the cooling system.
I run a 50/50 mix of water and ethylene glycol antifreeze year round. And it doesn't even freeze here that often.
the modern antifreeze/coolant also provides year round protection against corrosion and adds lube properties for the water pump..makes it a win win all year long..
anti- freeze has good lubricity, and it acts almost like a binder or gel. keeps the water for airating and damaging the pump. but it does not cool well. while water cools very well but is corrosive and could cause damage. best mix is about 60% water to 40% anti freeze, but 50 50 is easier to do and works almost as good
Don't let the directions on the can out smart you... Most manufactures of coolant/anti-freeze recommend a 50/50 mix of distilled water and coolant for year round use, the recommended life is generally five (5) years... It is very true that straight water does cool slightly better than a coolant, however, the difference is marginal at it's best. When you factor in the anti corrosive quality's of the coolant and longevity compared to water, there is no comparison. It is true that you can buy additives to make straight water more anti-corrosive, but why bother when you still have to drain and flush the system every year.... I have better things to do with my time....Bill
C'mon guys, why not help the environment out by using low toxic propaline glycol instead of poisonous ethaline glycol?
