Title: Dust Shield Grommets
Post by: mvair on April 06, 2011, 12:51:52 AM
Attached is a photo of the grommets that go in the engine dust shields where the headlight cables pass from the engine compartment to the back of the headlights. These are on my '41 Plymouth.

Does anyone know, or can confirm on their car, if these are covered in rubber? I can't tell if there was a rubber grommet that these went over or if these where coated in rubber on both the front and back side. If the were coated on both sides, I plan to dip them in some Plasti Dip. If they only had rubber on the back, I will figure something else out.

Thanks for any information. Hopefully someone has some good ones on an original car and can tell how they were made.

Mark,
I looked at my ASC yesterday, then my sedan. Found that I was totally missing the grommets on the sedan! Must have been put a side when I blasted them many years ago, and forgot about them. After almost standing on my head, to view the grommets that are on the ASC, I found that they are in fact, rubber coated, but seem to have heavier rubber on the engine side of the grommet. This allowed the grommet to fit very tight against the fender pan. The stainless Head Light wire loom or covers, rested on the rubber. Without actually taking the gromment out, I do not know if there is rubber on both sides. If there in fact is, it is REALLY thin on the one side. Hope this helps.

Thank you Lindsay. You have confirmed what I suspected but could not tell from my old rusty parts. I will see if I can use some Plasti Dip to simulate the original coating.
