Title: PC or PCXX
Post by: martin pook on February 21, 2011, 11:02:01 AM
I wonder if anyone can help. I have a 1933 Plymouth Six - there should be a small picture when you read this. Serial number is 1817040 and engine number PC 59822. These lie with the range for a PC production November 32 - April 33 according to ply33. But the wheel base is 108" and it has twin sidemounts so you would think it was a PCXX produced in April 1933. BUT, I have the Swedish registration document - the car is now in UK although not yet registered - showing the date of first registration in Stockholm as 1st January 1933 as BRD 995. that would suggest it is an early PC because it would have had to get from Detroit to Sweden.
Any ideas?
Martin

Photo did not make it on to your posting. Or at least my browser did not show it.

Is the radiator cap under the hood (PC) or is it external (PCXX)?

Picture should come up under my name (//)
The radiator cap is under the hood which indicates a PC. So where did it get the extra inch and why are the numbers so late in the series?

There were a number of production changes on the PC including moving the front axle forward on the spring to allow for front side mount spare tires. Not sure what serial number that occurred on. The Standard Catalog of American Cars for 1805-1942 has this information which I think came originally from Jim Benjaminson:

QuoteThe PC was distinguished by its short wheelbase, (which was increased by one inch early in production to accommodate fender mounted spare tires), chromed radiator shell with bolted-in-place Flying Lady ornament and painted headlamp shell sin the shape of a bowl. On the interior the instruments were placed in an engine turned panel in the center of the dash, but the car lacked a temperature gauge.

The tiny image under your name looks like a PC to me with the way the hood louvers are slanted (vertical on PCXX and PD) and the more sloped radiator shell than the PD and PCXX have.

Martin are you photos on your computer or on an online hosting server.  If they are on a server open your album and then copy and paste the url address from your browser address bar.  If they are on you computer you need to put them on an addressable server.  If you just want to post a couple without creating an account you can use Imageshack.com to load a few photos when you wish.

Miss Plymouth looks like a real beauty, post a picture on here for us. Your AVITAR is pretty small.
Thanks, and good luck with the your project.

Thanks for the pictures, Missy is a beauty. Congrates. Did you build the trunk yourself. That is pretty nice also.
Thanks,

The trunk has a French makers name on it. It is constructed from pylwood which shows some delamination - simple enough to cure - and has some plain but quite heavy clasps. The edges are reinforced with light steel angles. It would be quite easy to construct one and very useful too. At the moment the roof panel is out and I am recovering it in leather cloth.

Definately a PC but a later one wih the slightly longer wheelbase.  Lots of changes between the PC and PCXX!  Great looking car.

Martin, your car is the 4th from the last PC built!   PC production ended with car # 1817044.  Your car is 1817040.  You mention it was registered in Sweden - quite possibly it was built in the Swedish plant - shipped from the USA as a CKD (completely knocked down) and put together as a complete unit there.   You would need the build card from Chrysler to see where it was shipped when new.    PC production started on November 11, 1932 and ran thru April 7, 1933.  Interesting the Swedish registration shows the car registered on New Years Day 1933 when it should have been built April 7th.   It will take the Chrysler build card to solve that question!  The build cards are available for $45 U.S. funds from Chrysler LLC, Corporate Historical Collection, CIMS 410-11-21, One Chrysler Drive, Auburn Hills, MI 48288
